Critters on Andros
There are a few critters that you will meet during your stay. Rule 1: bring bug spray.
- Sand flies: very small little pests that are especially bothersome at dawn and dusk, they live in the sea weed. Just make sure you keep your windows closed so they don’t come in (they can get through the window screens).
- Mosquitoes: not as much of a nuisance but they are there.
- Doctor flies (a.k.a. Deer Flies) are called this because they can draw blood, they can take a good bite during the hot months and apparently they like dark clothing
- Ants: there are a few you might see so please make sure NOT TO LEAVE ANY FOOD OR DRINK OUT ON THE COUNTERS
- Small white ants: these are very tiny ants that can come in through the windows and will only come in if there is something to eat on the counter
- Red ants: watch where you walk on the grass, if you step on a hill, they can leave a good sting on your foot. If this happens, dip your feet into the ocean and it will instantly take any burn away
- Regular black ants: typically seen on road, not bothersome
- Spiders: not seen often, you may come across a few tiny spiders in your unit (corners or shower), just wipe away with a cloth. There is spider kill spray under the sink. The big ones typically stay outside and we haven’t come across one inside yet.
